Book dedications

Having finished The Famished Road last night I decided to revisit a book I read when I was 10 for my next read: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. It is part of my 1000 books challenge as only books I read post 16 count!

Whenever I start a new book I always flip straight to the dedication. This must be the most beautiful I have ever read:

My Dear Lucy,

I wrote this story for you, but when I began it I had not realised that girls grow quicker than books. As a result you are already too old for fairy tales, and by the time it is printed and bound you will be older still. But some day you will be old enough to start ready fairy tales again. You can then take it down from some upper shelf, dust it, and tell me what you think of it. I shall probably be too deaf to hear, and to old to understand a word you say, but I shall still be your affectionate Godfather. C.S. Lewis.

I would love to hear some of your favourites!

  1. That’s lovely. I just finished reading A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Russian author Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. It’s the only book I’ve ever come across where the translator puts in his own dedication at the front…

  2. This is beautiful! I read this book ages ago, when I must have been around 10 years of age and too young to fully appreciate the dedication. I shall keep my eyes out for something equally as beautiful and hope to share this with you.
